Topic: Well, this is a relief.

Posted under General

As an archivist IRL... this is such a great relief that I don't have to try to get 51,000 items downloaded in 7 days.

So, let me say 'thank you' to all involved. It is much appreciated.

51k?? Holy shit. I thought my 3.3k was a lot. I've already made a habit of backing up this stuff though because you never know when a website will randomly get shut down.

16000-66000 were what I had missing. I have everything else. 0-15000 and 66000-present. I wasn't at the start of e6AI so I left the backfill for 'whenever I could'. But yeah... I have bits of archived stuff back to the mid 1990s. bits and pieces due to hardware failures through the years but... that's life.

I got 36k archived myself! The trope about once it's on the internet it's there forever is very very false. The only way to be certain you won't lose it is to save it yourself.

Well, it _is_ all out there _somewhere_... just where that is you'll never find out, unless you run for public office.

You sound a lot like me. I've got stuff going back to the 80s! I've got about 7.1k of the posts in 16000-66000, many of which probably got deleted at some point. But I only back up the things that personally interest me, so it's not a sequential chunk, just artists and tags I follow. I would archive everything if I could afford it. Happy to share if it would help any.

Well, it appears that everything that was _there_ is now _here_ so there's no time rush. I'll hit you up later to fill in the blanks of deleted/removed materials. I don't really know if it's a matter of priority or affording, as thumb drives aren't that expensive, really - at least not where I'm at in the globe. Like... 2.5 hours' work for one that will hold 64Gb so... but either way, I appreciate the offer and may take you up on that later, if you don't mind.

Such a smooth transition. I do hope we can keep the lights on without Bad Dragon cash.

It seems the group is crowdsourced rather than sales based. I'd imagine any financial contributions are very much appreciated, though. There's a donation link at the bottom, but that's also why there's no banner ads for sextoy-of-the-term with some disguised so you don't know exactly what they're shilling. Or 'wank to AI chat of your favorite cartoon character' ads. To me that last is a modern version of the 900-numbers of days gone by.

I had a girlfriend/romantic interest that used to talk dirty like that for cash on a 900 line... while balancing her checkbook or watching Wheel of Torture with the sound off, fake-moaning every so often. If she took calls while I was visiting her place it was hard not to laugh out loud in the background when she'd describe being in some of her lingerie and actually dressed in jeans and an old t-shirt.

Such were the times...

I still have bookmarks for hundreds of artists on E6AI, and that's just those marked as "really-really good, check them out and save to disc as soon as possible". One day you check the website and see a tiny two-line announcement that you'll never get to see their art at all.

Feels like if someone kicking your door in in the middle of the night and screaming and pouring gasoline all over your bed. What a nightmare.

Well, if their art is anywhere x-16500 or 66000-193896, I've got it saved already, along with pretty much everyone else's art too.

I think this site is searchable by artist/director... so... there's that.

Glad its back in a new yet familiar site. I got banned for a tongue in cheek suggestion on the announcement forum post for the remainder of the site's life, lol. It was more in irritation and i can understand that it was instigative, but ah well, the hammer comes for all of us eventually. Live and learn 😅

Bit of both. e6ai/blep is far from the only site I archive. I've got about 40TB of stuff, plus 2x backups of all of it. With a 16TB HDD running around $700 here I'm looking at like $2100 the next time I upgrade anything at minimum. The AI bubble has hit hard drives just as hard as every other computer component unfortunately. So I have been having to be more choosy than I would prefer. But I'm happy to share anything I have that might be useful.

🫡 A thousand thanks to all the hard-working data hoarders of the world. You're our final and greatest hope in the darkest of times.

My main concept is thumb drives until it goes to optical disc (Data DVD) eventually. I don't really have backups because, like you, it would cost far more than I can justify in both time and materials. But... that's the cost of being an archivist.

*chuckles* Yer welcome... from one small blip in the electron stream.
