Topic: I preferred "Director" over "Artist"

Posted under General

Title. I just think it was neat, and fits a lot more with what a lot of users actually do with AI.

There was some discussion among staff regarding this with people on both sides, but in the end we did decide on artist, partially because it was easier to maintain the terminology in the code as is when forking e621. Changing it to director as with e6ai would've added unnecessary complexity.

But... it worked before, and that was a fork as well, or wasn't it? 😶 I'm not savvy when it comes to this, don't hurt me.

Shame, I liked the use of director, it felt more honest and gave the anti crowd one stick less to beat with.
Even when I do add my own little doodles to my work, I have no pretentions of being an artist.

Have to say I agree with OP but if there are technical reasons behind it I guess it’s …fine

It did, and I'm not the tech guy here, but it did lead to some amount of headaches. Better to not have to worry about that anymore, technical debt and all.

Well, okay. If it spares the people doing the actual maintenance work (off which I make free use) a lot of repeat annoyance, that's worth it.

Updated

I kinda get it, but there's that perspective of if this relatively minor (but certainly non-trivial) change is too much work, what does that mean for being able to actively maintain the site in the future?

Moth Dusky filed a DMCA against a client while tracing Ai gens upwards of 80 times.

ARTIST.

I like "director" better because I feel it fairly describes the actual process. A movie director doesn't play the characters, work the camera, set up the lighting, or write the music score - but obviously you wouldn't say a director is superficial to process. Likewise, an AI director doesn't paint the minute details of the picture, but they do direct the work of an AI.

But for most people, an "artist" is someone who makes pretty pictures, so fair enough. It's just a word, it describes what you do. It's fine.

I can understand that perspective. I'm not educated enough in database and code maintenance so I can't give any good alternative suggestions

i also vote for the change from artist to director

there is already some complexity into changing literally anything

100% agreed. Change artist to director. I accept AI art being a form of art, but I'm not an artist in the same way. Director is alot more suitable on all counts. Compared to the whole importing of the thousands of uploads and favourites from e6AI, I doubt it would be too complex to sort out.

As much as I am very much in the director ballpark myself, I can tell you that it is the god-honest truth that keeping it as artist keeps the upstream code easy to merge and maintain.

Perhaps there might be something able to be done about it in the future, but lets not get too worked up about this as it currently stands. 💜

I, too, was in favor of the term director being maintained, but I also don't want to make our devs' work harder :c

At least while the paint dries on our new home. lets get the house built first before we talk about an addition, plenty of time for that later.
